Ojude Oba 2026: Ijebu-Ode Lights Up in Colour as Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun Celebrates Unity and Heritage

    May 30, 2026 • 3 min read

Ijebu-Ode turned into a living canvas on Friday, May 29, 2026, as thousands filled the ancient town for the 2026 Ojude Oba Festival. The annual celebration brought together residents, tourists, dignitaries and sons and daughters of Ijebuland from across Nigeria and the diaspora. The streets reflected tradition through horse-riding displays, richly embroidered attire and performances by Regberegbe age-grade groups. Music and pageantry turned the town into a showcase of Yoruba heritage and cultural pride.

The parade of Regberegbe age grade groups formed the heart of the celebration as men and women moved through the town in coordinated colours and patterns. Each age-grade group displayed unity through matching fabrics and choreographed steps that reflected decades of tradition. The visual language of the Regberegbe turned the festival into a moving exhibition of identity, with participants expressing pride through fashion, movement and collective presence.

Horse riders added another layer of grandeur as members of Balogun families arrived on decorated horses, adorned in rich fabrics that spoke to history and status. The riders made their way to the palace grounds in a procession that combined elegance with discipline. For many visitors, the horse-riding display remained the most striking image of Ojude Oba, connecting the present celebration to over a century of homage-paying tradition.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, described the festival as a strong symbol of peaceful coexistence and communal harmony. He said his administration deliberately positioned Ojude Oba as a flagship of Ogun State’s tourism agenda to harness its cultural and economic value. The governor noted that the state government is working with stakeholders to expand the festival’s global visibility while protecting the authentic traditions of the Ijebu people. He pointed to the economic impact visible during the event, with hotels fully booked, businesses busy and artisans engaged.

This year’s edition carried special weight because it was the first Ojude Oba since the passing of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, on July 13, 2025. Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, paid tribute to the late monarch, noting that his 65-year reign shaped Ijebuland and elevated the festival into a global attraction. He revealed that before his transition, the Awujale insisted the celebration must continue without interruption. The monarch believed Ojude Oba remained a unifying institution for generations of Ijebu people. Organisers confirmed that the 2026 festival proceeded in line with that instruction, turning grief into a celebration of continuity.

The event also drew national attention with prominent guests in attendance. Ogun State Deputy Governor Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Minister of Arts Culture Tourism and Creative Economy Hannatu Musa Musawa, and former Ogun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba were present. The presence of leaders from government, business and traditional institutions reinforced the festival’s role as a meeting point for culture, unity and progress. Organisers described the 2026 celebration as emotional yet historic, a moment that allowed Ijebu sons and daughters to reconnect with their roots while honouring the legacy of a monarch who made the festival a source of identity and pride.

Atiku Defeats Amaechi, Hayatu-Deen To Win ADC Presidential Ticket For 2027

By Atinuke Otedola and her Editorial Team

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has clinched the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election after defeating former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and ex-banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in a fiercely contested nationwide primary.

The outcome was announced late Wednesday at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja by returning officer Tunde Ogbeha, following accredited voting across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory through the direct primary system adopted by the ADC.

According to the final figures released by the party, Atiku secured 1,855,787 votes. Amaechi came second with 509,397 votes, while Hayatu-Deen polled 180,903 votes. The total votes cast stood at 2,546,457, with total party membership for the exercise put at 3,113,599.

    IMG-20260528-WA0087

A breakdown of the results showed Atiku defeated Amaechi with a margin of 1,346,390 votes and led Hayatu-Deen by 1,674,884 votes, cementing his dominance in the contest. The ADC presidential primary began on Monday, May 25, 2026, amid pressure from stakeholders who pushed for a consensus arrangement to prevent internal divisions ahead of 2027.

However, Atiku, Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen reportedly refused to step down for one another, forcing the party leadership to proceed with a full-scale primary election. Although some party leaders initially explored a consensus option, the ADC eventually settled for the direct primary model, insisting the process aligned with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the party’s commitment to internal democracy.

Atiku’s emergence is expected to significantly reshape political calculations ahead of the 2027 presidential election as opposition parties intensify moves to challenge the ruling party at the centre. The victory marks another presidential bid for the former vice president, who previously contested under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2019 and 2023.

    IMG-20260528-WA0085

Meanwhile, Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen had earlier raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the process and boycotted the announcement of the results. Amaechi described the results as “concocted,” alleging massive voter disenfranchisement and manipulation, while Hayatu-Deen cited widespread vote rigging and manipulation.

ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi urged both aspirants to seek redress through established party structures rather than public confrontation, stating there was no evidence to support claims that the primary was rigged.

By Atinuke Otedola and her Editorial Team

Nigerian-born Councillor Rosaline Ogunro has been inaugurated as the new Mayor of Islington, marking another milestone for the Nigerian diaspora in British politics. The ceremony took place in London, with Ogunro becoming the first Nigerian-born woman to hold the ceremonial role in the borough.

Her emergence comes just a year after Nigerian-born Jason Jackson made history as Islington’s first Nigerian-born mayor. The back-to-back appointments underscore the growing civic and political influence of Nigerians across the United Kingdom.

Ogunro brings decades of experience in community advocacy, broadcasting, and public service to the role. She was first elected as Councillor for St. Peter’s and Canalside Ward in May 2022. Since then, she has served on the Homes and Communities Scrutiny Committee and the Licensing Committee, and held the position of Deputy Mayor before her elevation.

Before entering politics, Ogunro worked with several voluntary organisations, including the Islington Citizens Advice Bureau, where she continues to serve part-time as an adviser. She also worked in the Marketing Department of the London Symphony Orchestra as Customer Service and Office Coordinator and sang in the orchestra’s Community Choir for more than 20 years.

Her background in broadcasting began in Nigeria’s Voice of Nigeria environment, where she worked as a continuity announcer. She was later appointed to the Board of Trustees of St Luke’s Centre in May 2022. Her interests include singing, fashion design, clothes making, and gardening.

The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, congratulated Ogunro, calling the achievement “a proud moment for Nigeria” and a demonstration of “excellence, dedication and impactful community service.” She expressed confidence that Ogunro would bring her wealth of experience and leadership to the role.

Ogunro assumes office at a time when local councils across the UK face mounting pressure over governance and public services. Her inauguration adds to the growing recognition of Nigerians in the UK across politics, business, healthcare, academia, and community development.

Earlier in January 2026, several Nigerians were recognised in King Charles III’s Honours List for contributions in medicine, education, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and civic leadership.

Crystal Palace Make History With First-Ever European Trophy After Beating Rayo Vallecano 1-0

By Atinuke Otedola and her Editorial Team

Crystal Palace etched their name into European football history on Wednesday night after defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the UEFA Conference League final at Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, Germany.

French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta emerged the hero for the English side, scoring early in the second half to hand Palace their first European title and give departing manager Oliver Glasner a memorable farewell. The victory also crushed Rayo Vallecano’s hopes of securing the first major trophy in the Spanish club’s history.

An emotional Mateta, speaking after the match, said: “First time in Europe, we did it. Now I just want to celebrate.” The triumph marks Glasner’s third trophy in two years with Crystal Palace, capping off what has become the most successful era in the club’s history.

    IMG-20260528-WA0004

The Austrian manager, who previously won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2022, once again underlined his reputation as a knockout competition specialist. Palace’s journey to the title came despite the departures of key stars Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi during the season, including Guehi’s January switch to Manchester City.

The London club also secured a return to the Europa League after initially qualifying for the competition before being demoted to the Conference League due to multi-club ownership regulations. Crystal Palace became the third London club in three years to win the competition after West Ham’s triumph in 2024 and Chelsea’s success in 2025.

Midfielder Adam Wharton, who had been battling an ankle injury, recovered in time to start the final and played a key role in the winning goal. Rayo Vallecano threatened first through Alemao, whose effort drifted narrowly wide midway into the first half, while Palace missed a golden opportunity before the break when Tyrick Mitchell headed wide from Wharton’s pinpoint cross.

    IMG-20260528-WA0005

The breakthrough finally arrived shortly after halftime when Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla parried Wharton’s long-range strike into the path of Mateta, who reacted quickly to slot home the rebound. Palace nearly doubled their lead moments later as Yeremy Pino’s free-kick struck both goalposts before ricocheting off a defender and hitting the woodwork again.

Despite late pressure from Rayo, Palace remained composed at the back to seal another major trophy following last season’s FA Cup triumph and this season’s Community Shield success. The win means Palace qualify for the league phase of the 2026-27 UEFA Europa League.

NCDC Steps Up Surveillance as Ebola Resurfaces in Congo, Uganda

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, has ramped up nationwide surveillance and emergency preparedness following fresh Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and a confirmed imported case in Uganda.

The agency gave the update on Sunday in a public health advisory signed by Director-General Dr. Jide Idris. He confirmed that Nigeria has no recorded Ebola case at the moment, but rising cross-border movement across the region has put health authorities on high alert.

Health officials in DRC and Uganda have already activated emergency responses, including enhanced monitoring, laboratory testing, contact tracing, and public awareness campaigns. The World Health Organization recently declared the situation a public health emergency of international concern, citing the spread of the Bundibugyo virus strain and risks to neighboring countries.

In Uganda’s capital Kampala, two lab-confirmed cases linked to travel from DRC were reported, with one death confirmed. In DRC, officials reported 80 suspected deaths and hundreds of suspected cases as of Saturday. The WHO said the outbreak poses a public health risk to other countries and has advised nations to activate emergency mechanisms and strengthen cross-border screening.

NCDC said it is working closely with Port Health Services and other stakeholders to strengthen checks at airports and borders. The agency has intensified event-based surveillance across all states to quickly detect unusual symptoms, strengthened laboratory readiness for rapid Ebola testing, reinforced infection control protocols in hospitals and clinics, and stepped up risk communication campaigns to inform the public on prevention and early reporting.

Dr. Idris stressed that early detection and reporting remain critical to stopping any possible importation of the virus. He noted that Nigeria’s experience with past outbreaks has improved the country’s ability to respond quickly and contain threats before they spread.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with blood, bodily fluids, or contaminated materials from infected people or animals. Symptoms appear within 2 to 21 days and include fever, weakness, headache, muscle pain, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, unexplained bleeding.

NCDC advises Nigerians to wash hands regularly with soap and water or use sanitizer, avoid contact with anyone showing Ebola-like symptoms, refrain from eating bushmeat especially bats and primates, and avoid non-essential travel to affected countries. Anyone who develops symptoms after travel to DRC, Uganda, or nearby areas should call NCDC’s toll-free line 6232 immediately and avoid public transport until health officials respond.

Nigeria remains Ebola-free for now, but NCDC says vigilance is non-negotiable. The agency will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as more information becomes available from regional and global health authorities.

Kate Returns! Princess Catherine Sparks Frenzy In Italy After Health Battle

REGGIO EMILIA, ITALY — Excitement swept through the Italian city of Reggio Emilia on Wednesday as crowds lined the streets to welcome Catherine, Princess of Wales on her first official overseas visit in more than three years.

Supporters gathered in the town square waving flowers and holding handmade “Ciao Kate” signs ahead of the Princess’ arrival for a two-day tour focused on early childhood education.

The visit marks a major milestone for Catherine following her cancer diagnosis and recovery journey. Royal aides described the trip as a significant moment in her gradual return to full public duties, saying the Princess was “energised”, “enthused” and eager to reconnect with people on the international stage.

Her visit to Reggio Emilia is centred around her long-running campaign on the importance of children’s early years development. The northern Italian city was specifically chosen because of its globally recognised approach to child education, known as the “Reggio Emilia approach”, which encourages learning through play and relationships.

According to palace aides, the Italy trip could become the first in a wider series of international visits examining different child development models around the world.

During the tour, Catherine is expected to meet teachers, parents and children at schools and community projects across the city, located about 45 miles west of Bologna.

The Princess of Wales last appeared before large overseas crowds in December 2022 during a visit to Boston with Prince William. Since then, she underwent cancer treatment before announcing in January 2025 that she was in remission.

Royal insiders said the Italy visit represents Catherine “taking it up a gear” as she gradually resumes a fuller royal schedule.

Catherine also shares a personal connection with Italy, having spent part of a gap year in Florence after leaving school.

She launched the Centre for Early Childhood in 2021 to spotlight how issues such as addiction and mental health struggles can often be traced back to experiences in early childhood.

Accompanying her on the fact-finding mission is Christian Guy, Executive Director of the Centre for Early Childhood, who said children’s wellbeing depends heavily on the quality of relationships, safety and emotional support they experience while growing up.

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Former Big Brother Naija All Stars winner Ilebaye Odiniya and her father, Emmanuel Odiniya, were involved in a physical altercation at their Abuja home earlier this week. The incident went viral after Ilebaye went live on Instagram in the early hours of Saturday, showing herself distressed and asking for help.

Police responded to a distress call from Royal Anchor Estate in Wuye around midnight. Officers said they found Ilebaye with visible bruises, and she was taken to NNPC Hospital alongside her two younger brothers and her father, who also sustained injuries. All of them were admitted for treatment.

    What Happened

Emmanuel Odiniya later addressed the situation in a voice note that circulated online. He said the clash wasn’t about hate, but frustration over how their relationship changed after Ilebaye won BBNaija All Stars.

He claimed he supported her campaign heavily and felt she became distant and disrespectful afterward. He also expressed concern about her decision to get cosmetic procedures at her age.

    Current Status

Fellow BBNaija star Beauty Tukura later updated fans, saying Ilebaye had been rescued and was safe. She added that Ilebaye would share her own story when she’s ready.

Police say the case is still under investigation and no one has been released yet.

PDP Crisis Deepens as Jonathan’s 2027 Ambition Splits Party Factions

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Nigeria’s political scene is heating up ahead of the 2027 elections, with former President Goodluck Jonathan caught in a growing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Reports show that Jonathan’s possible return to presidential politics has triggered a power struggle between rival groups inside the party, exposing serious internal divisions.

Two major factions—one linked to former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike and another associated with party leader Kabiru Tanimu Turaki—are currently at odds over Jonathan’s role in the party’s 2027 plans.

The tension increased after speculation that Jonathan might obtain a presidential nomination form before the deadline. However, as of now, he has not secured a form from either faction, leaving his intentions unclear.

Spokespersons from both camps have given conflicting statements. A representative of the Wike-aligned group said Jonathan has not bought their nomination form and is not expected. On the other hand, the Turaki faction insists Jonathan is still a PDP member and has the right to contest.

The situation is further complicated by legal concerns over Jonathan’s eligibility, along with claims of bias in ongoing judicial proceedings.

There are also reports that he faces a very short window to officially enter the race, increasing pressure on him to make a decision quickly.

Political observers warn that the ongoing crisis could weaken the PDP’s chances in 2027 if not resolved. Instead of uniting the party, Jonathan’s potential candidacy appears to be deepening existing divisions.

As events unfold, the PDP faces a major test of unity, while Jonathan’s next move could significantly shape the party’s future and the 2027 election.

Candidates seeking admission into Nigerian universities for the 2026/2027 academic session can now breathe easier after the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) officially retained 150 as the minimum cut-off mark for university admissions nationwide.

The decision was announced on Monday during JAMB’s annual policy meeting held in Abuja, where vice-chancellors from various universities across the country participated in the deliberations and voting process.

According to the examination body, the benchmark was approved following votes cast by the vice-chancellors present at the meeting.

The announcement means universities will not admit candidates who score below 150 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for the 2026/2027 admission cycle.

More details are expected to emerge from the policy meeting as stakeholders continue discussions on admission guidelines for tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
