Atiku Raises Alarm Over Suspicious Bank Deposit

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has alerted Nigeria’s security agencies after discovering what he described as a suspicious bank transfer into one of his personal accounts, raising fresh concerns over financial privacy and possible political sabotage ahead of the 2027 general election.

The development was disclosed on Friday in a statement issued by Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, who said the transaction came from an individual completely unknown to the former Vice President. According to the statement, the payment carried the narration, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign,” despite the fact that neither Atiku nor his political organisation had requested or authorised such a donation.

Shaibu said the deposit immediately raised red flags because the account involved is a strictly private bank account that has never been designated for campaign fundraising or public donations. He stressed that Atiku had no prior knowledge of the sender and that neither his campaign team nor any authorised representative had solicited the payment.

According to the statement, the incident has triggered serious concerns over the security of confidential banking information and how unknown persons gained access to the details of a private account.

The former Vice President’s media office argued that the matter extends beyond a routine financial transaction and raises broader questions about the protection of personal financial data in Nigeria. It maintained that if the confidential banking details of a former Vice President and leading presidential candidate could be accessed by unknown individuals, then the financial privacy of ordinary Nigerians could be even more vulnerable.

Shaibu questioned how strangers were able to obtain the account details of a private citizen whose banking information is not publicly available.

He warned that any unauthorised access to confidential financial records could expose account holders to significant security threats, including fraud, identity theft, kidnapping, terrorism, banditry and other criminal activities.

According to the statement, should investigations reveal that the account information was obtained through individuals with privileged access to banking records, such conduct would amount to a serious abuse of authority that deserves urgent investigation and possible prosecution.

The media aide stressed that safeguarding customers’ confidential financial information remains a fundamental responsibility of financial institutions and regulatory authorities.

He therefore called on relevant security agencies to investigate both the source of the transfer and the circumstances surrounding the disclosure of the account details.

The statement described the incident as deeply disturbing, noting that Atiku considers the circumstances surrounding the transaction highly suspicious because neither he nor his political organisation has any relationship with the individual responsible for the payment.

According to Shaibu, the former Vice President has directed that the matter be brought to the attention of relevant authorities to ensure that every aspect of the transaction is properly examined.

The statement also linked the development to what it described as a pattern of suspicious activities emerging ahead of the 2027 general election.

It warned Nigerians against being distracted by what it called desperate attempts to create controversies capable of damaging the reputation of opposition figures.

According to Atiku’s media office, political actors should remain focused on addressing the country’s pressing challenges rather than engaging in tactics designed to create unnecessary distractions.

Shaibu insisted that the former Vice President neither requested nor authorised any contribution into the private account and has no knowledge whatsoever of the individual or organisation behind the transfer.

He added that no legitimate campaign fundraising process involves unsolicited payments into private personal accounts, making the transaction particularly unusual.

The statement further maintained that previous attempts to discredit Atiku through similar strategies had failed and expressed confidence that Nigerians would see through any effort aimed at creating misleading narratives ahead of the election.

Despite the incident, the former Vice President reaffirmed his commitment to his political agenda, saying he remains focused on presenting practical solutions to Nigeria’s economic, security and governance challenges.

His media office said Atiku will continue nationwide consultations and political engagements as preparations for the next general election gather momentum.

The statement concluded by urging security agencies to thoroughly investigate the suspicious transaction, establish how the confidential banking information became available to unknown persons and identify everyone connected with the transfer.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the commercial bank involved nor Nigeria’s security agencies had issued an official statement on the matter. The identity of the sender also remains unknown.

The incident has nevertheless reignited public debate over banking confidentiality, data protection and the security of customers’ financial information, especially as political activities continue to intensify ahead of the 2027 general election. It is expected that any official investigation into the transfer could provide further clarity on whether the transaction was an isolated incident or part of a broader attempt to compromise confidential financial information or influence the political environment.
