Four residents abducted by suspected kidnappers in Oke-Ere community, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, have regained their freedom after a joint rescue operation involving local vigilantes and personnel of the Nigerian Army. The successful operation, carried out on Sunday, also led to the killing of three suspected bandits, while a member of the local vigilante group lost his life during the fierce exchange of gunfire.
The incident is the latest in a series of security challenges affecting parts of Kogi State and highlights the growing efforts by security agencies and community-based vigilante groups to tackle kidnapping and armed attacks across the region.
Victims Abducted While Heading to River
The victims were reportedly kidnapped in the early hours of Sunday while travelling to a river known as Liberia, located within Oke-Ere community. According to local sources, the armed attackers intercepted the group and forcefully took them into the surrounding forest.
The abducted residents were identified as Tunde, Stephen and two Hausa residents. Their disappearance immediately triggered panic within the community, prompting local vigilantes to mobilise while notifying the Nigerian Army for reinforcement.
Residents said the attack occurred at daybreak, with the gunmen taking advantage of the quiet hours to carry out the abduction before fleeing into nearby bushes.
Joint Security Team Launches Immediate Rescue Mission
Following reports of the kidnapping, local vigilante members and soldiers from the Nigerian Army quickly organised a coordinated search-and-rescue operation.
Security operatives tracked the kidnappers into the surrounding forest, where they eventually caught up with the fleeing gang. This resulted in a fierce gun battle between the joint security team and the suspected kidnappers.
During the exchange of gunfire, three suspected bandits were neutralised. Several others reportedly escaped deeper into the forest after sustaining gunshot wounds.
Security sources believe the injured suspects may attempt to seek treatment in nearby communities, raising expectations that additional arrests could follow if intelligence gathering continues.
Four Victims Rescued Unharmed
The operation ended successfully with the rescue of all four kidnapped residents.
The victims were freed without reported injuries and were safely reunited with their families after spending only a few hours in captivity.
Residents welcomed the successful rescue, describing it as a major relief for the community, which has increasingly become concerned about insecurity and the activities of armed criminal groups operating around remote areas.
The swift response by both the military and local vigilantes has also been praised as a demonstration of the importance of cooperation between formal security agencies and community security volunteers.
Vigilante Member Pays the Ultimate Price
Despite the success of the operation, the community suffered a painful loss.
A respected local vigilante member identified simply as Baba Glo was killed during the gun battle while confronting the kidnappers.
Community members described him as one of the most dedicated volunteers committed to protecting Oke-Ere from criminal attacks.
Residents said Baba Glo was known for responding promptly whenever security threats emerged and was deeply respected for his courage and willingness to defend his community.
His death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from residents, many of whom described him as a hero who sacrificed his life to save others.
Security Presence Strengthened
Before the successful rescue, reports had indicated that Nigerian Army personnel had already been deployed to Oke-Ere to coordinate efforts aimed at locating the abducted residents.
The deployment formed part of an emergency response after local security volunteers alerted military authorities about the kidnapping.
The rapid collaboration between the military and local vigilantes is believed to have significantly reduced the time the victims spent in captivity and prevented the kidnappers from moving them to deeper forest hideouts.
Authorities are expected to continue search operations in surrounding areas to track down the fleeing members of the gang and prevent further attacks.
Renewed Focus on Kogi Security
The incident comes barely 24 hours after Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, officially passed out 530 pioneer Forest Guards in Lokoja.
During the graduation ceremony, the Governor charged the newly trained personnel to work with other security agencies in protecting communities and preventing criminal activities across the State.
The Forest Guards initiative forms part of the State’s broader strategy to improve surveillance in forests and rural communities, many of which have become vulnerable to kidnapping and other violent crimes.
Sunday’s rescue operation is likely to reinforce calls for stronger collaboration among the military, police, local vigilantes and the newly inaugurated Forest Guards to sustain pressure on criminal groups operating within Kogi State.
As security agencies continue investigations and pursue the fleeing suspects, residents remain hopeful that the successful rescue will serve as a major setback for kidnapping gangs while encouraging continued vigilance and stronger security operations across the State.
