A tragic road accident has claimed the life of a female motorist after her vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a roadside building at Mongoro, inward Ile-Zik, along one of Lagos’ busiest traffic corridors.

The fatal incident was confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in a statement issued on Sunday by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to LASTMA, preliminary findings indicate that the victim was driving a Toyota Sienna with registration number LND 162 HB when she suddenly lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle reportedly left the carriageway before crashing violently into a nearby building.

The agency disclosed that the impact of the collision was severe, leaving the driver with fatal injuries. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash, and she died instantly from the force of the impact.

LASTMA officials on routine patrol responded immediately after the incident, securing the crash scene and directing traffic to prevent congestion and reduce the risk of secondary accidents. Although the accident temporarily disrupted movement along the route, the agency said normal traffic flow was restored within a short time through the coordinated efforts of its personnel.

Security during the evacuation was provided by officers from the Afonka Police Post under the Shasha Divisional Police Headquarters, who assisted in maintaining order throughout the emergency operation.

Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as a painful reminder of the dangers associated with excessive speed and reckless driving.

“The incident is a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating consequences associated with excessive speed and reckless driving.”

He urged motorists to approach every journey with patience, caution and strict compliance with traffic regulations.

“Every journey must be undertaken with prudence, patience and an unwavering commitment to established traffic regulations. No destination is worth the ultimate sacrifice of human life.”

Bakare-Oki stressed that speeding remains one of the leading causes of fatal road crashes, calling on drivers to exercise restraint and remain fully attentive while behind the wheel.

“Excessive speed remains one of the foremost causes of fatal road traffic crashes, and motorists must, at all times, exercise the highest degree of caution, restraint and responsibility while behind the wheel.”

He also advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are mechanically sound before setting out on any trip, noting that cars showing signs of mechanical faults should not be driven until they have been professionally repaired.

The LASTMA boss extended the agency’s heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, praying that they find the strength and comfort to bear the painful loss.

The incident adds to ongoing concerns over road safety in Lagos, where traffic authorities have continued to urge motorists to obey speed limits, maintain their vehicles properly and adopt responsible driving habits. Officials believe that strict adherence to traffic regulations and regular vehicle maintenance remain essential measures in reducing avoidable road crashes and saving lives.
