Funke Akindele vs Toyin Abraham: December Box Office War Is Back As Fans Renew Rivalry Ahead Of Dec 11 And Dec 16 Releases
The annual December battle for Nollywood box office supremacy is back, and fans have renewed the long-running rivalry between two of Nigeria’s biggest filmmakers, Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham.
Both cinema heavyweights are scheduled to release major projects just five days apart during the 2026 festive season. Funke Akindele’s action-drama, The Four: No One Fights Alone, opens in cinemas nationwide on December 11, 2026. Toyin Abraham’s comedy-drama, Bestie, follows closely on December 16, 2026.
With only five days between the two releases, fans on social media have already chosen sides. Hashtags, fan edits, and box office predictions have flooded Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook today, November 1.
The rivalry intensified again this week after Funke Akindele announced a global marketing partnership with Meta / Facebook for The Four: No One Fights Alone. According to the announcement, Facebook will give audiences an inside look at the film, from production activities and promotional campaigns to premiere moments and previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage. The partnership also covers the film’s world premiere in London and its homecoming premiere in Lagos.
Days after the announcement, Toyin Abraham shared a throwback to her TikTok collaboration on Oversabi Aunty, thanking TikTok Africa. That post sparked fresh debate online, with fans accusing both sides of trying to outshine each other. Toyin wrote: “Thank you a lot, TikTok. Africa. #Oversabiaunty is #whattowatch in all cinemas from today.”
The Four: No One Fights Alone features a star-studded ensemble cast including Richard Mofe-Damijo, Bisola Aiyeola, Chioma Akpotha, Timini Egbuson, Lateef Adedimeji, and Ali Nuhu. Bestie stars veteran actor Pete Edochie as Papa Ngozi alongside Bolaji Ogunmola and other top stars.
The December holiday window remains the most lucrative period of the year for Nigerian theatrical releases. Families, students on holiday, and diaspora visitors all rush to cinemas. Funke Akindele holds multiple historic domestic box-office records, driven by massive turnout for projects like A Tribe Called Judah and Battle on Buka Street. Toyin Abraham has also built a dedicated festive cinema audience through hits like the Fate of Alakada franchise and Ijakumo.
The rivalry dates back to the early 2010s when both actresses began attracting significant attention in the Yoruba film industry. It intensified in 2021 when their films competed at the box office, and again in 2024 and 2025 with Everybody Loves Jenifa and Alakada: Bad and Boujee.
With less than six weeks to December, both camps are expected to release trailers, premiere dates, and ticket pre-sales in the coming days. For now, the question on everyone’s lips is simple: Who will win Christmas 2026?
