NCDC Calms Fears Over Hantavirus, Says No Case in Nigeria

    NCDC Hantavirus advisory

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has moved to calm growing fears over reports of Hantavirus infections spreading across parts of the world, declaring that no case of the disease has been recorded in Nigeria.

In a Public Health Advisory released on Saturday, May 9, 2026, the agency said Nigerians should not panic, stressing that the country remains free of the virus despite rising global concerns linked to an outbreak associated with international cruise ship travel involving several countries.

“At this time, there is NO confirmed case of Hantavirus in Nigeria, and the overall risk to the public remains low,” the NCDC stated.

The Agency explained that it has intensified monitoring and surveillance efforts to ensure any imported or emerging infectious disease is detected quickly and contained.

According to the NCDC, Hantavirus is mainly carried by rodents, while humans can become infected through contact with infected rats or exposure to their urine, saliva, droppings or contaminated dust particles. Although the virus is not commonly transmitted between humans, health authorities warned that it can trigger severe illness in infected persons.

Symptoms listed by the Agency include fever, fatigue, body aches, headaches, stomach-related complications and, in severe situations, breathing difficulties.

Despite assuring Nigerians that there is currently no outbreak in the country, the NCDC urged residents to remain vigilant by maintaining clean surroundings, preventing rodent infestations, storing food properly, disposing waste safely and observing proper hand hygiene.

The Agency also warned against the circulation of false information and urged Nigerians to depend only on verified updates from recognised public health authorities.

“Please rely only on verified updates from official public health authorities and avoid spreading misinformation,” the advisory added.

The NCDC said it has strengthened disease surveillance systems nationwide as part of efforts to improve preparedness and ensure rapid response to any potential public health threat.

The advisory followed fresh global concerns after suspected Hantavirus infections linked to the outbreak-hit cruise ship, MV Hondius, were reported in Spain and on the remote South Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha.

Reuters reported on Friday that the suspected cases involved a man who became ill after leaving the ship and a woman who reportedly fell sick after sitting close to an infected passenger during a flight.

The World Health Organisation (WHO), however, maintained that the overall public health risk remains low, despite fears that the virus may have spread beyond the Dutch-flagged expedition cruise liner.

According to the WHO, eight people aboard the MV Hondius were initially identified as suspected Hantavirus cases, while six infections have already been confirmed through laboratory testing. Three deaths have also been recorded.

FCT Police Arrest Ilebaye’s Father Over Alleged Assault

    Ilebaye Odiniya news

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Emmanuel Odiniya, father of former Big Brother Naija winner, Ilebaye Odiniya, after officers responded to an emergency report of an alleged assault at a residence in Abuja.

The incident, which reportedly unfolded in the early hours of Saturday, sparked widespread concern online after a distressing livestream involving the reality TV star circulated across social media platforms.

Confirming the development, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the distress call was received around midnight on May 9, 2026, from Royal Anchor Estate in Wuye, Abuja.

“On May 9, 2026, at about 12:00 a.m., the FCT Police Command responded to a distress call from Royal Anchor Estate, Wuye, Abuja, reporting an ongoing physical assault on Ms. Ilebaye Odiniya Emmanuel by her father, Hon. Emmanuel Odiniya,” the statement read.

According to the police, officers attached to the Wuye Division, alongside operatives from the Department of Operations, were immediately deployed to the scene, while the Police Public Relations Officer personally monitored the operation.

Authorities disclosed that gaining access to the residence initially proved difficult because the compound gate was locked.

“After several attempts, access was gained into the compound at about 2:30 a.m.,” Adeh stated.

Police said Ilebaye was eventually rescued alongside her brothers and was found with visible bruises. She was subsequently taken to the NNPC Hospital in Abuja for medical treatment.

The Command further confirmed that Emmanuel Odiniya is currently in police custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The official police statement comes hours after concern erupted online over Ilebaye’s emotional livestream, where the former reality show winner appeared visibly distressed, crying and repeatedly calling for help.

The video triggered panic among fans, celebrities and fellow reality TV personalities, many of whom demanded urgent intervention after allegations of assault surfaced online.

Public figures including Tacha Akide and Beauty Tukura also reacted publicly as anxiety mounted over Ilebaye’s safety.

Beauty later assured supporters that the reality star was safe and would speak about the incident when she was ready.

The incident has since reignited conversations around domestic violence, family disputes and the importance of rapid emergency response in cases involving abuse allegations.

As police investigations continue, many supporters have expressed relief that authorities intervened and removed Ilebaye from the situation safely.

In a statement released on Friday, Dada revealed that the occasion was Modupe’s second posthumous birthday, noting that two years ago they had discussed how she wished to celebrate the milestone.

“When I had the conversation with you exactly 2 years ago on how you would like to celebrate your 50th birthday… little did I know that it would be your second posthumous birthday. God knows best,” he wrote.

Describing his late wife as “light in its purest form—steady, warm, and life-giving,” Dada praised her “quiet but unshakable compassion,” “genuine love that never asked for recognition,” and her humility despite having “everything.”

He said he and his daughters, Serere and Olorire, would join heaven in celebrating her: “not just for the years you lived, but for the impact and love you left behind.”

“Happy 50th birthday, my love. You are missed deeply beyond words, endlessly cherished beyond measure, and loved beyond time,” he concluded.

Modupe Dada was remembered by many as a woman of grace, kindness, and unconditional affection.

  • Chinyere Ekomaru Quits as Imo Deputy Governor

Chinyere Ekomaru Quits as Imo Deputy Governor

Chinyere Ekomaru, has reportedly stepped down from her position, triggering widespread reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape.
The development, which surfaced on Friday, has yet to be accompanied by a detailed official statement from the state government, leaving many questions unanswered about the circumstances surrounding her sudden exit.

    No Official Explanation Yet

As of the time of filing this report, the administration of Hope Uzodimma has not publicly clarified the reason behind Ekomaru’s resignation. Government insiders have also remained tight-lipped, further fueling speculation.
However, indications suggest that the process to appoint a new deputy governor may already be underway. Under Nigeria’s constitutional provisions, the governor is expected to nominate a replacement, subject to screening and confirmation by the State House of Assembly.

    Political Speculations Emerge

Although no official reason has been confirmed, political observers have begun to weigh in on possible motives behind the move.
Some analysts believe Ekomaru’s resignation could be linked to future political ambitions, including a potential bid for higher elective office. Others point to ongoing political alignments within the state, particularly the “Charter of Equity” arrangement, which has been a key factor in Imo’s power-sharing discussions.
These claims, however, remain speculative and have not been verified by government authorities.

    A Brief Tenure in Office

Ekomaru assumed office as deputy governor in January 2024 after being elected alongside Governor Uzodimma. Her emergence marked a significant shift in the state’s political structure, succeeding former deputy governor Placid Njoku.
During her time in office, she played a supporting role in the state’s executive council, assisting in governance and policy implementation.

    What Happens Next?

With her reported resignation, attention now turns to the next steps in Imo’s political process. The nomination and confirmation of a new deputy governor will be critical to maintaining stability within the state’s executive arm.
Until an official statement is released, the full details behind Ekomaru’s departure remain unclear.

    Developing Story

This is a developing situation, and more information is expected to emerge in the coming hours or days. Political stakeholders and residents alike are watching closely as events unfold.
