Nigeria’s Falconets have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after defeating England’s Young Lionesses 3-0 in a commanding Round of 16 encounter in Bielsko-Biała, Poland, on Thursday.
The Nigerian U-20 women’s national team produced a disciplined and clinical performance to eliminate England from the competition, with goals from Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu securing a comfortable victory.
The result means Nigeria will continue its campaign at the tournament and will face either hosts Poland or Colombia in the quarter-finals on Sunday, September 20, in Łódź.
Rafiu Gives Falconets Early Lead
Nigeria made an immediate statement in the knockout fixture, taking the lead after just eight minutes.
Tosin Rafiu capitalised on an error from the English defence before driving into the penalty area and calmly finishing past England goalkeeper, Katie Cox.
The early goal gave the Falconets a strong platform, although England responded with sustained attacking pressure as they attempted to restore parity.
The Young Lionesses created several opportunities during the opening half, with Princess Ademiluyi among those who threatened the Nigerian defence. However, Falconets goalkeeper, Christiana Uzoma, was outstanding when called upon.
Uzoma first produced an important save to deny Ademiluyi before making an even more significant intervention later in the half.
England were awarded a penalty following a Video Assistant Referee review after a foul inside Nigeria’s penalty area.
Rachel Maltby stepped up to take the spot-kick, presenting England with an opportunity to draw level before half-time.
But Uzoma kept her side in front.
The Nigerian goalkeeper read the penalty well and tipped Maltby’s effort onto the crossbar, preventing England from finding the equaliser.

Nigeria returned from the break with renewed attacking intent and quickly extended its advantage.
Janet Akekoromowei doubled the Falconets’ lead just two minutes into the second half, scoring in the 47th minute.
The Benfica forward reacted quickest after England failed to properly clear a corner and struck the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
The goal placed England under considerable pressure and forced the Young Lionesses to chase the game.
England attempted to respond and continued to push forward, but Nigeria remained dangerous on the counterattack.
The Falconets’ defence also maintained its composure, while Uzoma continued to provide security behind the backline.
England had opportunities to reduce the deficit, but Nigeria’s defensive organisation prevented the European side from turning its pressure into goals.
Mamudu Completes 3-0 Victory
With England searching for a way back into the contest, Nigeria delivered the decisive blow in the 73rd minute.
Mary Mamudu scored the Falconets’ third goal to effectively put the match beyond England’s reach.
Akekoromowei helped create the opportunity by winning possession before setting up Mamudu, who finished into an unguarded net.
The goal sparked further celebrations from the Nigerian team and left England needing three goals in the remaining stages of the match to stay alive.
Nigeria successfully managed the closing minutes and saw out the game without conceding.
When the final whistle sounded, the scoreboard read England 0-3 Nigeria, confirming the Falconets’ passage into the last eight.
Falconets Bounce Back After Difficult Start
The victory represents a significant turnaround for Nigeria, which endured a difficult beginning to its World Cup campaign.
The Falconets opened their Group F campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Spain before playing out a goalless draw against China.
With only one point from their first two matches, Nigeria needed a strong result in its final group fixture to keep its tournament hopes alive.
The team responded emphatically by defeating New Caledonia 10-1.
That emphatic victory helped Nigeria finish second in Group F with four points and secure a place in the knockout stages.
The Falconets then carried that momentum into the Round of 16, producing their most complete performance of the tournament so far against England.
The victory also extends Nigeria’s impressive history at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. The Falconets are two-time runners-up in the competition and remain one of the African teams with a notable record at the tournament.
Nigeria Await Poland or Colombia
Nigeria’s next challenge will come in the quarter-finals on Sunday, September 20.
The Falconets will meet the winner of the Round of 16 match between tournament hosts, Poland, and Colombia.
The quarter-final will be played in Łódź, where Nigeria will attempt to move one step closer to another appearance in the latter stages of the U-20 Women’s World Cup.
For coach Moses Aduku and his players, Thursday’s victory provides further evidence of their ability to recover from a difficult group-stage opening and compete strongly in the knockout rounds.
