Residents of Kubwa, Abuja, were thrown into panic on Sunday morning after a vehicle reportedly crashed into a gas outlet along Arab Road, triggering an explosion that shook buildings across parts of the densely populated suburb.
The incident occurred at about 6:15 a.m. around the Liberty Junction area of Kubwa, with the explosion sending residents rushing out of their homes as flames engulfed the gas facility and affected surrounding businesses.
Early reports from the scene said the vehicle involved in the crash was completely destroyed by the ensuing fire, while nearby shops and roadside structures were also affected. Reports also indicated that a shelter stand and signposts around Liberty Junction were damaged in the incident.
The blast was reportedly powerful enough to be heard and felt well beyond the immediate area. Residents of Dantata Estate, located roughly two kilometres from the scene, said the impact caused buildings in the neighbourhood to vibrate.
One resident, describing the experience, said the explosion was loud enough to wake people from their sleep and left residents trying to establish what had happened.
The incident reportedly began when the vehicle rammed into the gas facility, although the precise circumstances that led to the crash had not been independently established in the early reports. Some accounts described the location as a roadside gas vendor’s shop, while others referred to it as a gas retail or refilling outlet.
The resulting fire quickly raised concern because of the presence of gas at the facility and the concentration of commercial activities around the junction.
According to reports from the scene, the driver of the vehicle and a child were rescued following the crash and taken to a hospital for medical attention. Other details concerning their conditions were not immediately available.
In a report on the incident, the crash injured the driver and the resulting fire spread to nearby shops and a traffic post.
The explosion also caused disruption to movement in the area as residents, emergency responders and other onlookers gathered around the scene.
A large crowd was reportedly seen obstructing the free flow of traffic around the affected area, while security personnel worked to control the situation.
Firefighters were also deployed to the scene as efforts continued to contain the blaze and prevent further danger to residents and businesses in the area. It was also reported that the Federal Fire Service was involved in the emergency response, with the incident causing panic among residents around Liberty Junction.
The damage extended beyond the gas outlet itself. Nearby shops were reportedly affected by the fire, while roadside infrastructure, including a shelter and signposts, was damaged. Reports also said the vehicle that crashed into the facility was completely burnt.
The incident comes in an area where Arab Road serves as an important commercial corridor for residents of Kubwa and surrounding communities. The road has numerous shops and businesses, meaning an emergency involving a gas facility can pose risks beyond the immediate point of impact.
The morning explosion therefore triggered concern among residents who live and operate businesses around the area, particularly because of the possibility of fire spreading to other structures.
ANOTHER report states that the explosion originated from a gas refilling outlet on Arab Road and caused panic among residents in the area.
As of the time of the early reports, there was no official confirmation of any fatality linked to the incident. The immediate focus of emergency responders remained on putting out the fire, securing the area and restoring normal movement.
The cause of the crash had also not been conclusively established in the initial reports. While the vehicle was said to have rammed into the gas outlet, authorities had yet to publicly provide a detailed account of what caused the driver to lose control or how the collision occurred.
The incident highlights the potential danger posed when high-risk facilities such as gas outlets operate close to busy commercial and residential areas. A vehicle collision at such a location can quickly escalate into a major emergency, particularly where flammable products are involved.
For residents who witnessed the explosion from a distance, the most alarming aspect was the reach of the blast. The fact that people in Dantata Estate, several kilometres away from the immediate scene, reportedly felt their buildings vibrate demonstrated the intensity of the explosion.
Emergency and security personnel remained at the location as authorities worked to bring the situation under control and prevent additional incidents.
Further information, including the condition of those rescued, the extent of the financial damage and the official cause of the crash, is expected to emerge as authorities complete their assessment of the scene.
