Lagos State University is set to graduate 20,604 students at its combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremonies, with 494 students earning First Class honours.
The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, disclosed this on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, during a press conference held ahead of the combined convocation for the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, 262 students obtained First Class honours during the 2024/2025 academic session, while another 232 achieved the same feat in the 2025/2026 session.
For the 2024/2025 academic session, LASU recorded 7,621 graduates from its first-degree programmes. The figure comprised 3,155 students who graduated with Second Class Upper Division; 3,439 with Second Class Lower Division; 622 with Third Class; and 37 with Pass degrees.
The University also recorded 106 graduates from the MBBS and BDS programmes whose degrees were classified as unclassified degrees.
For the 2025/2026 academic session, 8,653 students completed first-degree programmes at the institution. Of the number, 3,545 graduated with Second Class Upper Division, while 4,157 obtained Second Class Lower Division.
Another 678 students finished with Third Class honours, while 31 graduated with Pass degrees.
Beyond undergraduate programmes, the University will confer postgraduate qualifications on 3,383 graduands from the two academic sessions.
The postgraduate graduates comprise 618 Postgraduate Diploma recipients, 1,508 academic Master’s degree recipients, 900 professional Master’s degree recipients, 238 PhD graduates and 119 professional doctoral graduates.
Two students were also recognised as the overall best graduating students for the two academic sessions.
Ayilara Lawal Olawale of the Department of Project Management emerged as the overall best graduating student for the 2024/2025 academic session after recording a CGPA of 4.96 and graduating with First Class honours.
For the 2025/2026 session, Adebanjo Samuel Oluolamide of the Department of Aerospace Engineering emerged as the overall best graduating student with a CGPA of 4.97 and First Class honours.
The combined convocation ceremonies will take place from August 17 to August 19, with different categories of graduates scheduled to receive their certificates at designated venues.
Graduates from the faculties of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences will be conferred with their degrees on August 17 at the Olatunji Bello Auditorium, Epe Campus.
Graduands from the remaining faculties will receive their degrees on August 18 at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Ojo.
The final day of the ceremonies, August 19, will feature the conferment of professional and academic doctoral degrees as well as honorary doctorate degrees on selected personalities.
The Vice-Chancellor described the combined convocation as historic, noting that it would be the final convocation she would preside over as the Vice-Chancellor of the University.
As part of the activities preceding the main ceremonies, LASU will hold a staff sports competition and its first Staff Celebration Day.
The University is also set to honour three prominent Nigerians with honorary doctorate degrees.
Akin Kekere-Ekun will receive a Doctor of Business Honoris Causa for his contributions to entrepreneurship, finance and management.
Harriet-Ann Omobola “Bola” Adesola will receive a Doctor of Business Honoris Causa in recognition of her contributions to corporate finance and governance.
Businessman and industrialist, Aliko Dangote, will also receive a Doctor of Business Honoris Causa for his contributions to entrepreneurship, industrial development and human capital development.
The University will additionally elevate Prof. Rafiu Olaoluwa Okuneye and Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello to the rank of Distinguished Professor.
The recognition is for their contributions to teaching, research, mentorship and the advancement of knowledge.
Olatunji-Bello also highlighted several developments recorded by LASU over the past year.
She disclosed that the National Universities Commission approved 17 new academic programmes for the University.
LASU also attracted more than 84,000 first-choice applications in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, making it the most subscribed university in Nigeria for the second consecutive year.
The Vice-Chancellor further revealed that two LASU students won consecutive ₦50m venture capital grants in 2026 in a national competition that attracted more than 30,000 applicants.
She added that the University had secured approval for a ₦3bn TETFund Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Cyber Sciences.
Construction has also commenced on a 1,500-bed student hostel estimated at ₦4bn.
The combined convocation is expected to bring together thousands of graduates, their families, university staff and other stakeholders as LASU celebrates academic achievements across undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes.
The ceremonies will also mark the conclusion of Olatunji-Bello’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor, making the event a significant moment in the University’s institutional history.
