The Lagos State Government has issued a traffic advisory to motorists, commuters and residents ahead of the inauguration of a new Fresh Food Hub at Pen Cinema in the Agege area of the State.
The State Government said the inauguration, scheduled for Wednesday, August 12, is expected to attract a large number of people and vehicles to the Pen Cinema-Agege axis, raising the possibility of traffic congestion and delays for road users.
The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation announced the advisory on Tuesday, August 11, urging motorists who intend to use the area during the event to plan their journeys ahead of time.
The Fresh Food Hub is expected to be inaugurated by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at Pen Cinema, Agege.
According to the Ministry, the event is being organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems and is expected to draw significant vehicular and pedestrian movement to the area.
The Government therefore advised motorists and commuters to consider alternative routes where possible, particularly during the hours of the inauguration.
The Ministry said the traffic advisory was necessary because of the anticipated concentration of people and vehicles around the venue and adjoining roads.
It also disclosed that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority would be deployed to the area to regulate traffic and minimise disruption to normal movement.
The deployment of traffic management personnel is expected to help control the flow of vehicles around Pen Cinema and other connecting routes as guests and members of the public arrive for the inauguration.
The Ministry appealed to motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and exercise patience while passing through the affected axis.
It further advised road users to allow additional time for their journeys and, where practicable, avoid the immediate vicinity of the event during the peak period.
The Fresh Food Hub forms part of Lagos State’s broader efforts to strengthen the food supply system and improve access to agricultural produce within the State.
Food distribution has remained an important issue for Lagos, a densely populated commercial centre that depends heavily on the movement of agricultural produce from farming communities and other parts of Nigeria.
The State Government has in recent years pursued the development of organised markets and food hubs as part of efforts to improve the distribution of food, support traders and reduce losses along the agricultural value chain.
A similar Fresh Food Hub was inaugurated at Idi-Oro, Mushin, in December 2023. That facility was designed to provide a more organised environment for the trading and distribution of agricultural produce, with features including storage and parking facilities.
The Mushin facility was presented by the State Government as part of its intervention in the food and agricultural sector, with the administration highlighting the need to improve market infrastructure and create better opportunities for traders.
The latest hub at Pen Cinema, Agege, is therefore coming against the backdrop of the State’s wider food-security initiatives.
The Lagos Government has also been developing larger-scale food logistics infrastructure, including the Lagos Food Security Systems and Central Logistics Park project, aimed at improving the storage, distribution and movement of food within the State.
The broader objective is to strengthen the connection between producers, distributors, traders and consumers while improving the efficiency of the food supply chain.
For residents around Agege, however, the immediate concern ahead of Wednesday’s inauguration is expected to be traffic management.
Pen Cinema is an important transport corridor in the Agege area, with significant daily movement of commercial vehicles, private cars, motorcycles, pedestrians and other road users.
An event capable of drawing a large number of Government officials, invited guests, traders and residents could therefore put additional pressure on the area’s road network.
The Ministry of Transportation said the deployment of traffic officials was part of the State’s routine arrangement for events that are expected to affect normal traffic movement.
The Government is consequently asking motorists not to wait until they reach the area before making adjustments to their journeys.
Commuters who have alternative routes are encouraged to use them during the period of the event, while those who must pass through Pen Cinema-Agege are advised to leave earlier and prepare for possible delays.
The Ministry also appealed to road users to follow instructions from traffic management officials deployed to the area.
It said the measures were designed to reduce congestion and inconvenience rather than prevent residents from accessing the area.
The Government acknowledged that the traffic measures could cause some inconvenience to road users but appealed for understanding and cooperation.
The advisory is expected to remain particularly relevant between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 12, when Governor Sanwo-Olu is scheduled to formally inaugurate the Fresh Food Hub.
Motorists travelling through the Pen Cinema-Agege axis during those hours may therefore experience slower movement as traffic officials manage the expected increase in vehicular and human activity.
Residents and commuters who have appointments or other engagements in the area have been advised to factor the event into their travel plans.
The Lagos State Government said the traffic management arrangement is part of its effort to minimise disruption while continuing with projects intended to improve the livelihood of residents.
For road users, the central message from the Government is to plan ahead, consider alternative routes, cooperate with LASTMA officials and exercise patience.
The inauguration of the Fresh Food Hub is expected to mark another step in Lagos State’s efforts to expand organised food-market infrastructure and improve the distribution of agricultural produce across the State.
While the event itself is expected to last several hours, authorities are particularly concerned about the temporary effect on traffic around Pen Cinema and its environs.
Motorists heading towards Agege on Wednesday are therefore advised to make necessary adjustments before setting out to avoid being caught unprepared by possible congestion.
