The Federal Government has embraced Kaduna State’s household mapping framework as a nationwide strategy in the fight against Nigeria’s out-of-school children crisis.
The decision was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, during a meeting with Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani in Abuja on Friday, July 31, 2026. The move follows the success of the initiative in Kaduna, where the number of out-of-school children has dropped dramatically from about 550,000 to fewer than 180,000.
Governor Sani described the adoption as a major endorsement of Kaduna State’s data-driven governance model, saying the household mapping framework has enabled the Government to identify vulnerable children, target interventions more effectively and channel resources to communities where they are needed most.
According to the Governor, the initiative has significantly improved school enrollment and retention through tailored programmes designed to address the unique challenges faced by children and their families.
Sani said the Federal Government’s decision to adopt the model reflects growing confidence in Kaduna State’s commitment to evidence-based policymaking and efficient service delivery in the education sector.
He expressed the State’s readiness to work closely with federal authorities to implement the household mapping framework across the country, noting that nationwide adoption could substantially improve access to education and further reduce the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that every child has access to quality education, stressing that reliable data, strategic partnerships and targeted interventions remain essential to achieving lasting progress in the education sector.
