The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced a formal investigation into the runway excursion involving an Enugu Air aircraft at Benin Airport, marking the next phase in efforts to determine what caused the incident.

The bureau confirmed that a team of investigators has been deployed to Benin Airport to examine the aircraft, inspect the runway, review operational records and gather evidence that could help establish the sequence of events that led to the occurrence.

According to the NSIB, the Embraer E170 aircraft, operating Flight 4264 from Lagos to Benin, overran the end of Runway 05 while landing. The agency also confirmed that all 63 passengers and five crew members on board were safely accounted for, with no injuries reported.

In an official statement, the bureau said the investigation is already underway and that specialists are working to preserve evidence in line with international aviation safety standards.

The NSIB stated: “The aircraft, operating as Flight 4264 (registration 5N-ENR) from Lagos to Benin, was involved in a runway excursion after overrunning the end of Runway 05 during landing.”

The bureau stressed that the purpose of its investigation is to identify the factors behind the incident and recommend safety improvements where necessary. It noted that aviation accident investigations are not intended to assign blame but to enhance flight safety and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Enugu Air has also pledged full cooperation with investigators. The airline previously confirmed that every passenger and crew member safely disembarked after the aircraft came to a stop beyond the runway, adding that there were no casualties.

While the aircraft remains at the airport for further examination, aviation authorities are expected to analyse flight data, weather conditions, aircraft performance and crew reports before releasing preliminary findings.

The NSIB has urged members of the public to allow investigators to complete their work and avoid speculation until official conclusions are reached.

A final investigation report will be issued after all technical assessments and evidence reviews have been completed, with any safety recommendations expected to be shared with relevant aviation stakeholders to strengthen air travel safety across Nigeria.
