Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has proceeded on vacation after more than a month of intensive engagements involving the commissioning of completed projects, flag-off ceremonies and inspections of ongoing infrastructure across Abuja and the Federal Capital Territory.
The development was disclosed on Monday, August 10, 2026, by Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, who announced that the Minister had taken time away from his official duties to rest after the prolonged project activities.
Olayinka made the disclosure in a post on X, describing the vacation as a period for the FCT Minister to relax following weeks of continuous official engagements.
According to the aide, Wike spent more than 30 days moving around the Federal Capital Territory to commission completed projects, flag off new developments and monitor construction work on projects that are still underway.
He also said the Minister used the period to assess projects scheduled for commissioning later in the year and early next year.
Olayinka wrote that Wike was taking a break after the extended period of activities, adding that the Minister had been particularly focused on projects expected to be ready for commissioning in December and January.
The vacation comes shortly after the FCT Administration concluded an extensive project commissioning programme that attracted considerable attention because of the number of projects inaugurated within a relatively short period.
The exercise began on June 9 and continued until July 17, according to reports on the programme. During the period, several roads and other infrastructure projects were commissioned across the FCT, including areas outside the central districts of Abuja.
One of the notable projects commissioned during the programme was the reconstructed Arab/Gbazango Road in Kubwa, Bwari Area Council. The project was described as part of the administration’s effort to extend infrastructure development beyond Abuja’s city centre to satellite towns and suburban communities.
At the commissioning of the road, Wike challenged critics of the Federal Government’s infrastructure record in the FCT to dispute the figures presented by his administration.
The Minister said that since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in 2023, contracts had been awarded for 317 kilometres of roads across satellite towns in the FCT. He stated that 221 kilometres had been completed, while another 96 kilometres remained under construction.
Wike’s project drive has been one of the defining features of his tenure as FCT Minister. Since his appointment in August 2023, he has repeatedly emphasised the need to address infrastructure deficits in Abuja while ensuring that development reaches communities outside the capital’s major urban districts.
The Minister has also focused on inherited projects, with the FCT Administration maintaining that a significant proportion of the infrastructure being commissioned was initiated under previous administrations but had remained incomplete.
Speaking at a special dinner held after the commissioning exercise, Wike said the FCT Administration completed nine projects during Tinubu’s first year in office, 19 in the second year and 31 projects during the President’s third year in office.
He also claimed that approximately 70 per cent of the projects completed and commissioned by the administration were inherited from previous governments.
The wider infrastructure programme has received praise from some political figures and stakeholders. In June, APC chieftain, Princewill Dike, described the 30-day project inauguration programme as a significant demonstration of infrastructure development under the Tinubu administration.
Similarly, former Ijaw Youth Council President, Udengs Eradiri, recently praised Wike’s performance in the FCT, arguing that the volume of projects commissioned within the period demonstrated what could be achieved through focused leadership.
The project commissioning programme also involved President Bola Tinubu, who inaugurated some of the infrastructure projects. At the June 10 commissioning of the two completed main carriageways of the Outer Southern Expressway, the President described the development as evidence of the administration’s infrastructure agenda and an indication that previously abandoned projects could be completed.
The OSEX project links Ring Road I around Gudu Cemetery with Ring Road II at Kabusha Junction and was among the major road projects featured during the commissioning programme.
Beyond project inaugurations, Wike has continued to inspect construction sites and monitor contractors working on roads and other infrastructure across the FCT. The administration has repeatedly stressed the importance of ensuring that projects are delivered according to specifications and within agreed timelines.
Olayinka’s latest disclosure suggests that the Minister’s recent absence from public project activities is temporary and linked to a vacation following the unusually busy commissioning schedule.
The aide indicated that Wike’s work programme had not ended, as attention had already shifted to projects expected to be completed and commissioned towards the end of 2026 and in January 2027.
The development therefore comes at a time when the FCT Administration is preparing for another round of project deliveries, with several ongoing construction works expected to reach completion in the coming months.
Wike, a former Governor of Rivers State, was appointed FCT Minister by President Tinubu in August 2023. Since then, his administration has placed considerable emphasis on road construction, rehabilitation of existing infrastructure, expansion of public facilities and development of satellite towns.
His latest vacation follows a period in which he was frequently seen at project sites and commissioning ceremonies across the territory.
While the Minister takes time away from official engagements, the FCT Administration is expected to continue supervising ongoing projects and preparing completed infrastructure for future commissioning.
The announcement also provides a brief pause in what has been one of the most intensive periods of project activity under Wike’s tenure as FCT Minister, following the completion of the 31-day commissioning exercise and the administration’s continuing push to deliver infrastructure across Abuja and its satellite communities.
