Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports that he is seeking the position of Director-General of President Bola Tinubu’s Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 election.
Wike said he had no interest in securing a formal position in the campaign structure, insisting that his support for Tinubu’s re-election does not depend on being appointed to any campaign office.
The former Rivers State Governor made the clarification through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, in a statement issued on Monday, August 10, 2026.
The statement followed reports suggesting that Wike was among political figures being considered or lobbying for the position of Director-General of the campaign council as preparations for the 2027 presidential election intensify.
Wike, however, rejected the claim and said he had not discussed either the leadership or membership of the proposed campaign council with anyone.
According to the Minister, his immediate attention remains on the implementation of the Federal Government’s programmes in the FCT and the delivery of projects under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He said his commitment to supporting the President’s second-term bid remained firm, but stressed that he could contribute to Tinubu’s electoral success without occupying any position in the campaign council.
Wike said he was currently outside Nigeria, taking a break after an intensive period of activities in the nation’s capital.
He explained that he had spent more than 30 days commissioning completed projects, flagging off new ones and inspecting ongoing projects across the FCT.
The Minister said several of the projects he inspected are scheduled for commissioning in December and January, indicating that his administrative responsibilities would remain a major focus when he returns to the country.
Wike said his priority would be to continue delivering on the mandate of the administration while also working to improve Tinubu’s electoral prospects in Rivers State and the FCT.
He stated that he did not need to become the campaign council’s Director-General, or even a member, before making a contribution to the President’s re-election effort.
The clarification is coming at a time when political activities ahead of the 2027 general election are gradually becoming more intense across Nigeria.
Wike’s political position has attracted particular attention because, although he remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, he has consistently backed Tinubu’s bid for a second term in office.
The FCT Minister was among the prominent PDP figures who opposed the Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, during the 2023 election and supported Tinubu.
His continued support for Tinubu has since generated speculation about his future political direction and his possible role in the President’s 2027 campaign.
The latest reports about the campaign DG position were not entirely without precedent. In March 2026, APC chieftain, Princewill Dike, publicly called on Tinubu to appoint Wike as Director-General of the President’s Presidential Campaign Council.
Dike argued at the time that Wike possessed the political network and experience required to coordinate a strong nationwide campaign for the President.
Wike’s latest statement, however, makes clear that he is not presenting himself as a candidate for the position.
Rather, he said he would contribute to Tinubu’s re-election effort through his political influence and activities in Rivers State and the FCT.
Rivers State remains particularly important to Wike because of his eight-year tenure as Governor and the political structure he built during his time in office.
The State was also central to the former Governor’s role in the 2023 presidential election. Despite being a PDP member at the time, Wike backed Tinubu, who contested the election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
The Minister has continued to publicly support Tinubu’s 2027 ambition. In May 2026, he said a political coalition in Rivers State had agreed on support for Tinubu’s presidential bid, while discussions over the coalition’s governorship candidate remained unresolved.
The FCT is another important part of Wike’s current political and administrative influence.
Since becoming Minister, he has overseen an extensive programme of road construction, rehabilitation and other infrastructure projects across Abuja and the satellite towns.
Wike has repeatedly presented the projects as part of the implementation of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, while the President has publicly backed the administration’s development programme in the capital.
His latest comments therefore appear to separate two issues: his political support for Tinubu and speculation about a formal role within the President’s campaign machinery.
Wike is saying that he does not require an official campaign appointment to mobilise political support for the President.
His focus, according to the statement, will remain on governance and the delivery of projects in the FCT, while using his political influence to strengthen Tinubu’s position in Rivers State and Abuja.
The Minister is expected to return to Nigeria after his break and resume work on projects already scheduled for commissioning and inspection.
His declaration also adds another dimension to the emerging political calculations ahead of the 2027 presidential election, particularly as political parties and various alliances continue to position themselves for the contest.
For now, Wike has ruled out the suggestion that he is lobbying for the campaign DG position and maintained that his support for Tinubu does not depend on holding a formal position in the President’s campaign council.
His message is that the objective, rather than the title attached to his name, remains his priority: helping Tinubu secure a strong electoral performance in Rivers State and the FCT in 2027.
