Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inspected the Festac-Alakija Bridge following an attempt by suspected vandals to damage parts of the critical infrastructure, assuring residents that the structure remains safe and structurally sound.
Sanwo-Olu carried out the inspection on Saturday, August 8, 2026, a day after directing security agencies to track down those responsible for the vandalism. The Governor visited the bridge for an on-the-spot assessment of the affected areas alongside contractors, members of the Lagos State Executive Council and local government chairmen.
The inspection came amid concerns over the condition of sections of the bridge after suspected vandals targeted parts of the structure. According to reports, officials of the Lagos State Office of Infrastructure had earlier examined the bridge and determined that its structural integrity had not been compromised.
During his visit, Sanwo-Olu personally inspected the bridge columns and other affected portions, reinforcing the earlier assessment that the infrastructure remained safe for use.
The Governor subsequently assured Lagos residents that there was no reason for alarm, saying the bridge was still structurally sound.
Sanwo-Olu also disclosed that immediate remedial measures would be carried out to protect the affected columns and prevent further deterioration. The planned intervention is expected to address the damage caused by the vandalism while preserving the integrity of the bridge.
The Governor’s inspection followed his strong condemnation of the incident on Friday. He described the vandalism of the Festac-Alakija Bridge as a criminal and unacceptable act capable of threatening critical public infrastructure.
He directed security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute individuals found to be responsible for the damage.
The Governor also warned that anyone involved in vandalising public infrastructure, as well as those who purchase stolen Government property, would face the full force of the law.
According to Sanwo-Olu, some suspects linked to the incident had already been taken into custody, while security agencies were continuing efforts to apprehend others believed to be involved.
He commended security personnel for responding quickly after the incident and securing the affected area. The Governor specifically acknowledged the efforts of the Police, Rapid Response Squad, Lagos State Task Force, Kick Against Indiscipline officials and members of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps.
The Governor’s position underscores the Lagos State Government’s growing concern over the impact of vandalism on public infrastructure across the State.
Public facilities such as bridges, roads, streetlights, drainage systems and other Government assets require significant public funds to construct and maintain. Damage to such infrastructure can therefore create additional financial pressure on Government while potentially disrupting services and posing safety concerns for residents.
The Festac-Alakija Bridge is particularly important because of its location along a busy corridor connecting communities around Festac, Alakija and other parts of the Lagos-Badagry axis.
The Governor also linked the inspection to his administration’s broader efforts to improve conditions along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway corridor.
Sanwo-Olu said the ongoing clean-up operation in the area was already producing visible results and would continue as part of the State Government’s efforts to improve the environment and protect public infrastructure.
He called on residents to take greater responsibility for safeguarding Government facilities in their communities.
The Governor urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around public infrastructure to the appropriate security authorities.
His appeal comes as the State intensifies its campaign against vandalism and other activities capable of damaging public assets.
The latest development also highlights the importance of quick intervention whenever critical infrastructure is targeted. Rather than allowing damage to worsen, the Lagos State Government says immediate remedial measures will be taken to secure the affected sections of the Festac-Alakija Bridge.
