Soldier, Police Officer Killed as Troops Rescue Nine Kidnap Victims in Zamfara
A Nigerian soldier and a police officer have lost their lives after security forces successfully repelled an overnight terrorist attack on a military base in Zamfara State, rescuing nine kidnapped civilians during the operation.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday at the Forward Operating Base in Kasuwan Daji, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, where troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA came under attack from heavily armed terrorists.
According to military authorities, the attackers attempted to infiltrate the base under the cover of darkness but encountered fierce resistance from troops stationed at the facility. A gun battle ensued, with the security personnel successfully forcing the assailants to retreat after inflicting significant casualties on them.
During the operation, troops also rescued nine civilians who had reportedly been abducted by the fleeing terrorists. The victims were safely recovered and handed over to the appropriate authorities for medical attention and further debriefing.
Although the operation was considered a tactical success, the military confirmed that one soldier and one police officer were killed while defending the base. Their deaths have been described as a painful reminder of the sacrifices made daily by security personnel combating terrorism and banditry across the country.
In an official statement, the Nigerian Army said troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, successfully repelled the attempted infiltration of the Forward Operating Base at Kasuwan Daji, inflicted heavy losses on the terrorists, and rescued nine abducted civilians.
Military authorities noted that the operation reflects the determination and resilience of troops despite the persistent threats posed by armed criminal groups operating in Nigeria’s North-West.
Security officials also disclosed that follow-up clearance operations are ongoing in nearby communities to track down the fleeing attackers and prevent further attacks on residents and security formations.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains one of the Nigerian military’s major counter-banditry operations aimed at restoring peace and stability across Zamfara State and neighbouring areas affected by violent attacks, kidnappings and other criminal activities.
Kaura Namoda Local Government Area has witnessed repeated security incidents in recent years, with armed groups frequently targeting rural communities, travellers and security personnel.
Authorities have yet to release the identities of the fallen security officers or provide additional information about the rescued civilians. However, they assured the public that efforts to dismantle criminal networks in the region will continue.
Residents have been encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing military operations.
The latest operation highlights both the growing security challenges confronting parts of northwestern Nigeria and the unwavering commitment of security forces working to protect lives and restore peace. Despite the loss of two officers, the successful rescue of the abductees represents another significant step in the ongoing campaign against terrorism and banditry in Zamfara State.
