The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru (FUAZ) branch in Kebbi State, has handed the institution’s Governing Council and management a 21-day ultimatum to implement the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and ASUU or face industrial action.
The Union warned that it would commence a strike if its demands are not met before the expiration of the ultimatum, which began on July 29, in line with its established procedures.
The resolution followed a special congress held on July 28 at the university auditorium, with members of the ASUU National Visitation Team and the ASUU Sokoto Zone Coordinator in attendance.
In a statement signed by the Branch Chairperson, Danbauchi Senchi, the Union expressed concern over the continued failure to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement at FUAZ despite what it described as clear directives from the Federal Government.
ASUU recalled that the renegotiated agreement was signed in December 2025 after 16 years of negotiations. According to the Union, the agreement provides for a 40 per cent upward review of academic staff salaries and the payment of outstanding entitlements.
The Union also noted that the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, had reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing the agreement and directed compliance. It added that funds had already been released to federal universities for the payment of five months’ accumulated Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) arrears.
However, ASUU alleged that the Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru, has yet to benefit from the implementation of those directives, leaving its lecturers without the approved financial benefits.
The congress further lamented that FUAZ remains the only federal university established and made operational without a take-off grant, adding that despite the difficult conditions, lecturers have continued to carry out their teaching and research responsibilities while awaiting Government intervention.
Among its demands, the Union called for the immediate implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement at the university, payment of five months’ accumulated CATA arrears and the settlement of all outstanding financial entitlements owed to its members.
Speaking after the congress, Senchi urged the university’s Governing Council, management, the Federal Government and other stakeholders to act without delay to resolve the issues, avert an industrial dispute and protect teaching, learning and research at the Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru.
