A new university has emerged in Delta State, bringing higher education closer to residents of the State’s riverine communities.

Zoro International Open University (ZIOU) has been established in Bomadi, the headquarters of Bomadi Local Government Area, with the institution set to expand access to tertiary education for young people in the area.

The university authorities said the institution was established in response to the growing educational needs of residents in riverine communities, where geographical challenges have continued to make access to higher education difficult.

The management of ZIOU disclosed that admission into the university would commence soon, adding that all necessary arrangements and operational requirements for the commencement of academic activities had been completed.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Osadi Benemone, said the establishment of the university would give students in riverine towns and villages the opportunity to pursue higher education without the challenges of travelling long distances to urban centres.

Benemone assured that the university had fulfilled the required conditions for commencement and was committed to providing quality education through a wide range of academic programmes.

The institution currently operates four faculties.

The Faculty of Sciences offers Agricultural Science and Computer Science, while the Faculty of Arts and Humanities offers programmes in English Language, Philosophy, Psychology, Mass Communication, International Relations and History.

The Faculty of Education offers Educational Management, Public Health Education, Social Studies and Biology Education.

The fourth faculty, the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, offers Accountancy, Business Administration, Public Administration, Economics, Marketing, Political Science and Criminology.

The university management said ZIOU would continue to expand its academic programmes and contribute to improving access to tertiary education in Delta State’s riverine communities and beyond.
