Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has joined a growing list of prominent Nigerians mourning the death of Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, the mother of former Governor of the State, Rotimi Amaechi.

Fubara expressed his condolences to the former Governor and the Amaechi family in a message issued on behalf of the government and people of Rivers State, describing the death of the 89-year-old matriarch as a profound loss to her family, the Catholic faithful, the Ubima community and the entire State.

The condolence message was contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Saturday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi.

While acknowledging the deep pain associated with losing a mother, Fubara urged Amaechi and his family to draw strength from the life their mother lived and the legacy she left behind.

He also acknowledged the important role she played in shaping the character and values of her family and the wider community.

The Governor prayed that God would comfort the bereaved family and grant the deceased eternal rest.

Dame Mary Amaechi died peacefully on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at the age of 89, according to a statement issued by the Rotimi Amaechi Media Office.

The family described her as a devoted Christian, respected community leader and cherished matriarch who promoted peace, unity and selfless service.

Since her death was announced, several prominent Nigerians have sent messages of condolence to Amaechi and his family, including President Bola Tinubu and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

Tinubu described the late Dame Amaechi as a woman of strong Catholic faith whose life was marked by humility, sacrifice, kindness and devotion to her family and humanity.

The African Democratic Congress, which is fielding Amaechi as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, also mourned the death of its candidate’s mother.

Amaechi, a former Governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transportation, is currently the ADC vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
