A chaotic scene unfolded on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway on Sunday after a speeding truck driver allegedly struck a pedestrian, fled, and later crushed a motorcyclist who was chasing him.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident began near the Iyana-Iba Flyover, close to Lagos State University’s main gate. A heavily loaded bucket truck was moving from the Volkswagen area toward Badagry when it hit a pedestrian.
Instead of stopping, the driver sped off. That’s when a motorcyclist and another passerby gave chase, trying to force him to stop and take responsibility.
LASTMA said the chase ended tragically when the truck rammed into the motorcycle. The motorcyclist died on the spot, while the second rider narrowly escaped with his life.
LASTMA’s Night Gang Surveillance team arrived quickly for rescue and recovery. Officials said the motorcyclist’s body was trapped under the truck’s front tyre before it was pulled out. The truck driver was arrested immediately and handed over to police at the PPL Post in Okokomaiko, alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), for further investigation.
FRSC officials evacuated the motorcyclist’s body, and family members later came to claim the pedestrian who was killed earlier. Both the damaged motorcycle and the truck were taken to the police station while investigations continue.
“This incident is heartbreaking,”
— Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA
He blamed reckless driving by truck operators for the rise in fatal crashes on Lagos highways, and urged drivers, especially truckers, to obey speed limits and drive carefully to prevent more loss of life.
