At least one person has lost their life, while three others have been rescued alive following the collapse of a two-storey building under construction in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026, prompting an emergency response from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
Confirming the development, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed that rescue personnel were still searching through the wreckage to establish whether additional victims remained trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
The three survivors, identified as adult males, were successfully pulled from the debris and provided with emergency medical attention before being transported to hospital for further treatment.
How Emergency Responders Arrived At The Scene
Providing details of the incident, Oke-Osanyintolu explained that the Agency received an emergency alert at approximately 12:10 a.m., reporting a building collapse in the Fadeyi neighbourhood.
Following the distress call, LASEMA immediately mobilised its Cobra Response Team stationed at the Onipanu Base.
The emergency personnel reportedly reached the affected location at 12:12 a.m., just two minutes after receiving the notification.
Upon arrival, responders discovered that a two-storey structure undergoing construction had collapsed, leaving a substantial amount of debris at the site.
Initial assessments suggested that construction workers were among those caught in the incident, raising concerns that several individuals could still be buried beneath the wreckage.
The development prompted an immediate search-and-rescue operation aimed at locating survivors and preventing further loss of life.
Rescuers Hear Sounds Beneath Collapsed Building
One of the significant developments during the rescue exercise was the discovery of signs suggesting that some victims were still alive underneath the fallen structure.
According to the LASEMA Permanent Secretary, emergency personnel detected groaning sounds coming from beneath the debris while conducting their search.
The sounds indicated the possible presence of survivors, making it necessary for rescue workers to continue their efforts to reach anyone who might still be trapped.
To support the operation, the Agency deployed an excavator to assist personnel in clearing the wreckage and accessing areas that could not easily be reached manually.
The heavy-duty equipment was introduced to facilitate the removal of collapsed building materials and improve access to sections of the site where victims were suspected to be trapped.
Despite the confirmation of one fatality, the Agency maintained its rescue operation as officials worked to determine whether more people were affected.
Three Survivors Taken To Hospital
LASEMA confirmed that three adult males were successfully rescued alive following the incident.
The survivors received immediate medical assistance from the Agency’s paramedics, working alongside personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
The emergency medical teams administered pre-hospital care to stabilise the victims before transferring them to hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
However, the Agency’s initial report did not disclose the identities of the rescued individuals, the hospital where they were admitted, or the severity of their injuries.
Similarly, the identity of the deceased person had not been made public at the time of the initial announcement.
The confirmation of three survivors offered some relief amid concerns over the possibility of additional casualties.
Search And Rescue Operations Continue
Emergency officials continued working at the collapsed building site to establish the full extent of the incident.
The immediate priority remained locating anyone who might still be beneath the rubble and ensuring that all affected persons were accounted for.
As of the initial emergency update, authorities had not established the total number of people present inside or around the building when it collapsed.
Consequently, the possibility of additional victims could not be ruled out.
The precise circumstances surrounding the structural failure also remained unclear, as LASEMA had not announced an official cause of the collapse.
There was equally no confirmed information indicating whether the incident resulted from construction defects, structural weaknesses, or other factors.
Any determination regarding the cause would require an assessment by the relevant authorities.
Lagos Building Collapse Raises Fresh Safety Concerns
The Fadeyi incident has once again brought attention to the importance of safety standards at construction sites across Lagos, particularly where workers may be exposed to structural hazards.
Building collapses remain a serious public safety concern because of the potential danger they pose to construction workers, occupants, neighbouring properties and emergency personnel.
The latest tragedy highlights the importance of proper structural supervision, adherence to approved building plans and the use of qualified professionals throughout construction projects.
It also underscores the critical role of timely emergency reporting and coordinated rescue operations when structural failures occur.
In the Fadeyi incident, the rapid deployment of LASEMA’s response personnel enabled rescue activities to begin shortly after the emergency notification was received.
Nevertheless, the circumstances that led to the building’s collapse remain subject to official clarification.
As emergency workers continue their efforts, further updates are expected to establish whether additional persons were trapped, the condition of those hospitalised and the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
For now, authorities have confirmed one death and three successful rescues following the collapse of the two-storey building in Fadeyi, Lagos State.
